Israeli Maritime Data Startup Windward to Enter Insurance

Aleph-backed Israeli startup Windward wants to enter the insurance space. The data and analytics company helps (mostly government agencies until now) understand what’s happening at sea – from tracking a ship all the way to understanding commodity trade flows via its maritime data platform. Because ‘the oceans are the last analog market’, according to the startup. Now the company, which was launched in 2011, is eyeing insurance as an extra revenue source. “We realized that what is useful for governments can also be suitable for marine insurance, because parties in both categories analyze and are concerned about risk factors originating in the sea” – CEO Ami Daniel. All else TBD. Bottom Line: on a vision and a view .
